Hank and Rene both had basketball games tonight - with travel time there was overlap, so Tony went to Hank's amd I went to Rene's.
Hank's was a tournament game - and they kept score! (He is in a developmental league and they don't keep score during the regular season). They won their game (insert score). They play again at noon today.
Rene is in the diocesan playoffs. They were undefeated for the season, and now they have won two rounds of playoff games! Tonight's game was a nailbiter - lots of parents commenting on how stressful.. Rene's reaction... "Well be glad you weren't the one who had to play in it!" Tonight's game all the girls looked nervous and they did not play well first half. Score was 10 to 4 at halftime, with Rene's team losing. But their coach must have said something to them during the half and they came out ready to go! Second half they were on fire and won 12 to 10 - the other team did not score a point the whole second half! All but two of our points were scored by one girl... with the final two winning points from free throw shots. Rene played a decent game and took a few shots, and they were so close, but didn't make it in - one actually jumped out of the basket, as they sometimes do!
After the game they had a pizza party at the coach's house. The girls are SOO excited!
THey play semi-finals on Sunday, and if they win they wll be in the championship game! GO PANTHERS :)

Rene's first playoff game was today.... and THEY WON!! It was an extremely intense game, with both teams giving it their all. Huge number of fouls on both sides (During the second half each team made 10 fouls!) Lots of players being knocked to the ground, fights over the ball were pretty intense, and emotions were high. Rene is a starter and had a fantastic game; she scored SIX points, making shots at some very key points in the game, as well as some key rebounds!! Panthers led throughout the game, but never by a comfortable margin. Final score 21 - 17, and the Panthers head to round 2. Playoff bracket is here: JV Playoff bracket

Rene is on the junior varsity basketball team. Rene and her friends are tall, strong girls, and they make a tremendous basketball team. Today was their last regular season game. The won 29-10. That leaves them with an undefeated season! I took a lot of pictures. Rene is number 50 - you can pick her out by her knee high basketball socks. She plays forward (the position under the basket that gets rebounds, at least the way I understand it :) Now we'll see what happens at the playoffs :) Good luck Rene!!
First pic: the teams saying the athletics prayer.
Rene getting a rebound. That's her job.

Hank is playing Jumpstart basketball this year. It's a developmental team, meaning the focus on skills and team building, and play games, but do not keep score. Hank is jersey number 1, and plays guard. Hank's doing an awesome job for his first year of basketball. He really loves sports.

SNOW!!!!
We have not seen this much snow in a long time!! It's beautiful!! As it accumulated last night the kids could not resist going out to build a quick snowman, but by this morning the snowman had already been drowned in new snow!

Our little storage shed out back. Where's the van?! Doug and Amy's back awnings.

Here's Tony shoveling snow. MASSIVE quantities of snow! You can see how high the snow got just to make a narrow path on the sidewalk. That black thing on the left is the mirror on the van. Hank's standing there to show the tremendous mountain of snow Tony made when he shoveled the driveway! And despite shoveling the driveway 4 or 5 times already, there's still enough on it for Hank to snowboard down the driveway! This snow is so much fun. We had a brief power outage last night, but it came right back on and while the kids play outside, I am warm and toasty inside!

The kids love this picture of Clyde. The kids were excited to take him to his first vet appointment. He weighs 10 pounds at 9 months, so they said it's time to cut the kitty chow!! They also told his he's genetically prone to gum disease and we have to brush his teeth every day?! The vet said Clyde has a really high tolerance for being handled... hmm, I wonder why? Each kid has their own style of holding him..REne's is the funniest - she cradles him like a baby!

Gramma and Grampa, if there is any doubt the kids appreciated your gift of a Wii this Christmas - take a look at how happy they are. They're doing Dance Dance Revolution, a game where you have to step on a dance pad following the pattern you see on the screen. We're so glad we had the basement finished as it's a great place for Wii. And those heated floors are such a luxury during this cold winter!! Second pic is Hank as a Penguin player at the Heinz History and Sports Museum.

I'm sure everybody has been waiting for this to happen! The retaining wall leaned further and further every year. This fall I began to worry that it would fall over, but never managed to have it fixed. Well, after the first big freeze-thaw cycle, it shifted so much it was about to knock over a water meter box on the side of the house. So we got some contractors to come remove the wall for safety now; they'll replace it in the spring.

It is with great sadness that I report the death of my only remaining grandparent, my grandmother, Liz. She was diagnosed with liver cancer in early summer, and has been under hospice care for the past few months. Last Monday night (12/21) she had her usual Monday night dinner for my dad and brothers, but they said she was a little disoriented. Early Tuesday morning she fell twice, and from then on she remained in bed in a semi conscious state. She died early Wednesday morning (12/30). I've attached our last photo of Liz (from summer 2008), as well as her obituary.
Elizabeth Lee Coward Crutchfield, 84, retired nurse, former U.S. Army Captain and widow of Cecil Leo Crutchfield, died Dec. 30, 2009 at home. Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 6 at West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery. Friends and family are welcome at the home during the wait. Liz was a guardian angel to her many friends and family. She leaves a daughter, Stephanie Wolf of Memphis, sons John Butler of Memphis and Delton Crutchfield of Blue Mountain, Miss., nieces Jennifer Coward and Carol Cable, nephews Mike Coward and Tommy Smith, seven grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and many other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, M.L. Coward, mother Ethel Davis Coward, brothers Horace Coward and Cecil Coward, sisters Bethel Smith and Helen Evangelist, a son, Edward Leo Crutchfield and a grandson, Tommy Butler. Donations may be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or a charity of the donor's choice.

SNOW!! We got some decent snow today, so the kids sledded and played in the snow. Rene outgrew all her winter accessories, and although we recently bought her new boots, they were not the kind for playing in the snow. So Rene borrowed TONY'S snow pants, and TONY's snow boots!!!! The pants were a bit big, but the boots - perfect fit!
While they were at the sledding hill in Schenley Park, Hank borrowed a snowboard from a friend. He LOVED it!! He stayed there for hours, snowboarding until after dark! He was going so fast that the snowboarding picture is a blur.
