Oh crap. I wrote 300 words at work and didn't upload THAT version of the file to yahoo, where I've been storing things to go back and forth between work and home (I take the files to work so I can print them and work on them at lunch. So now I'm faced with 48383, instead of the 48600+ I should have had. It's not a big difference, but I'm not going to work tomorrow, so I'll have to make up that difference. That will add a whole 10 or 15 minutes to my evening. *sigh*

I got to 48682 at lunch. That's less than 1400 to go. I hope it isn't anticlimatic for anyone once I hit 50,000.

Remember, there is still time to send me unmarked bills in order to get your name included in the rewrites of the novel. $10,000 gets you top billing.

Good morning everyone. It's a rainy day, the perfect day for cranking out 2000+ words, wouldn't you say? The novel won't be "done" because I'm smack in the middle of the story (plus there are two chapters that will be removed from the front after I hit the deadline, because I made a major plot change and one of the characters ceased to exist after that. Anyway, the goal for NaNoWriMo was 50,000 words by November 30th. If your novel isn't exactly finished, you get to keep writing into December.

Another lovely day in Massachusetts. I'm in a good mood, I think because the end of the month is near. I did have to have a talk with Mr. Dump last night about how I don't want to go back to my pre-November not-writing-anything-at-all state, but I also won't be in that "I can't do anything or talk to anyone because I have to write" frenzy. It's really important to me that I keep writing - probably because it's taken me 36 years to get this much done in "one sitting." I just hope that even without a deadline looming, I'll keep working, maybe on something new, letting this one fester in a drawer like Stephen King recommends, until it's aged enough for me to edit. I'm to close to it right now. But I don't want to have to wait until NEXT November to write something else.

Oh, and I'm up to 45621 this morning.

This is just flat out wrong. Willy Wonka is a good Thanksgiving movie. A Christmas Carol is a great Thanksgiving movie. Mulan is not.

Maybe I can compromise and slip A Muppet Christmas Carol in between showings of Bob the Builder and Shrek.

As it is, I found myself describing how painfully boring it is to work in a bookstore (which I've never done, so maybe it's quite exciting) in much more detail than should be included in a novel.

I'm going to cozy up in bed with a good trashy magazine. As Jefferson Airplane said so eloquently, "Feed your head."

I'm at 22639, which sounds pretty good, but is a bit shy of where I should be. Today is the halfway point. So I should have 25000 by the end of the night. Except there is no way in heck I can pull off another 2400 words tonight. Not unless Mothra were to show up and start attacking the protagonist in her living room.

And I have no idea what to have the protagonist do now. Shouldn't something happen in a novel? I have to start writing down the stuff I think of as I'm falling asleep. I'm sure that's how Stephen King does it. Now I still have almost all 1666 words left for today, because I was busy trying to get something done during lunch. *sigh*

It's interesting to write a novel. Everything that happens to you in real life can somehow be twisted into something useful. I was lying awake in bed last night, and to keep myself from being grumpy that I couldn't fall asleep, I started thinking, okay, so I could give the protagonist insomnia, and this is how it feels. This is what she's thinking.

Of course, because I didn't write anything down, I don't remember what I came up with.

Oh man, I'm so depressed. If I worked for Tivo, I'll bet this wouldn't be a problem. Hey Tivo.com person, I'm willing to do $99 worth of consulting in exchange for getting my Tivo fixed!

Ugh. Only 236 words so far today. I'm glad yesterday was a productive one.

p.s. The cake was horrible and I threw it out.

[I'm stalling.] Hey, did you know that there are a lot of hits for "Jody+blog" on google? None of them are mine, I don't think. Maybe because I haven't used the word "Jody" yet. So there is is.

Hmm. Okay, it's lunchtime, and I haven't written a word yet. I suppose I could cut myself a little bit of slack, but this is a good use of my lunch hour. I'm kind of in "fear of a blank page" mode because I started a new chapter in a new .doc file.

I am also trying to figure out if the new chapter should just continue right from where the old one ended. I could go either way right now. Maybe I'll just have a piece of cake.

Back to the grind. I voted this morning. Man, our current mayor might be the cutest guy I've ever met in person. I swear, if he doesn't win the election today, he should go into show business.

The cool thing is that because his opponent lives in my neighborhood, he was actually at my polling place this morning. As Mookie and I were leaving, I gave him a thumbs up to let him know I voted for him, and was rewarded with a HUGE smile and a wave. Ahhhhhh.

In novel news, the first 10k words was about 31 pages. I think the goal is to have 200 pages (well, the goal is 50,000 words, but...) so at 50k works, I'm on target for only 150 pages. I wonder what I'm doing wrong? I'm using 12 point fonts with 1 inch margins. Oh, and there is a lot of dialog, so you'd think I'd have MORE pages, rather than less. Oh well, I'm stopping that first file at 31 pages and putting chapter 4 (yea!) into a new file. I don't want my Word files getting too big.

Woo baby! I'm done 20% of the goal! I have 10,275 words done as of this moment. I'm going to take a well-deserved little break to do some reading. Ahhh, it's nice to be ahead!

Cool! A list of all the people blogging their novel writing experiences on Journalers NaNoWriMo.

Oh man, I'm getting a REALLY late start on my remaining 900 words. Crap. Oh well, I'll do what I can. Thanks to Mr. Dump for giving Mookie his bath tonight. I'm at 9451

And yes, that is a smaller version of my webcam over there on the left. Too bad most of my writing is done at home when I'm not on camera. But it's not set to reload. Go to the home page to see it update (if it's on, that is.)

I'm tremendously excited to find a new source for good fireplace Screen Savers. The one making the rounds as shareware was kind of old and, well, not that great. I would actually like to commission someone to do a really good one for me, but I don't think I know anyone who creates screen savers.

Anyway, I'll be posting this link in the main page as well. I'm getting a LOT of hits these days from people looking for these.

Wow, that was a fast lunch hour! I should have started writing a novel a long time ago! I have 9127 words now, aiming for 10,000.

Part of me wants to notify the local Leominster/Fitchburg/Worcester papers that someone in town is participating in this world-wide effort, just to get this hits to this page up a bit, but that seems pretty self-serving. So if the local press reads this, you can just contact me by writing to jody@bigdumptruck.com.

One cool thing is that I got really mad at someone who works in my building today, so I used their name for a really hateful person in the novel...and now I feel better!

Good morning! The Snakes win the World Series, and all is right with the world!

Okay, my goal today is to hit 10,000 words total, which will mean I'm 20% done. Do not point out that it also means I am 80% not done. I haven't had my coffee yet. I'm at 8426 right now, but will not be able to put much effort in except for lunch, because I am at work after all.

Here is an article on this project: PluggedIn: Time-Pressed Authors Seek Advice Online

I'm going to bed. 8118 words! Holy cow, I'm looking at the time for the last entry. That's a lot of work in only a half hour. Of course it's all crap, but the mantra of this project is "quantity, not quality." I can do that.

Wow! I just checked and I have 7468 words now! I am rocking and rolling! What helped was a change of scenery. I put the laptop on a small table, threw a fake log in the fireplace and let 'er rip. I got into a whole Lousia May Alcott groove except she wrote in the attic in longhand. Well, there's always the next novel for that, except I think I hear something scurrying up there last night, and we live in a cape so at the highest point there's probably only 3 feet of clearance up there.

I'm going to write for another 10-15 minutes and go up to bed and do some reading. I've been poking through my "library" looking for good books written in the 1st person for stylistic hints. I had just finished a good one that's at work, so I'll take that home tomorrow.

6210. Hey, maybe I can do this today.

[Richard Pryor voice] I'm bad, I'm bad...

Hey, the Emmy's are on tonight. I'm going to have to figure out if I care. Barbra Streisand is supposed to perform. Seems odd to me. Oh well, I'd like to watch to make sure the Sopranos win a bucket of awards.

5737 words. I can't take a nap, can I? Darn it, I want to take a nap. And I want to go see Monsters Inc with my family this evening. But when would I get another 2000 words written?

I hate deadlines.

The weather this weekend has made it VERY hard to be tied to a computer. But I did a little work first thing, before we went out for breakfast, our little family tradition on Sundays. I did get some boxes cleaned up out of the living room, and did some dusting, so now I can feel good about doing a bit of typing.

I am at 5333, but was supposed to aim for 7600+ by the end of the day today. That sounds like a lot to me right now. Especially when I want to go do something fun outside on this lovely fall day. Mookie and Mr. Dump are mowing the back yard. Well, Mookie is sitting on a chair watching him. THAT'S my boy.

I'm back from my "date." Mookie hung out with grandma and grandpa at their house for 90 minutes while we went to the Cornerstone Restaurant in Leominster. I hadn't been there in years, and I can't remember why it's not on our list of places to go. Anyway, both of us had EXCELLENT meals, great desserts (even the decaf was fresh!) and I had some heavenly pino grigio, my favorite wine. I know it's getting trendy now, but I liked it before it was trendy.

Oh, so now I'm writing a bit more before bed while Mr. Dump watches Arizona kick the living crap out of the Yankees. 10 to nothing. In the 3rd inning! Oh, wait. Now it's 11 to nothing. Maybe they should just call the game like they do in little league.

Okay, I'm at 4379, aiming for 4800 before I head off to bed.

4039. I thought I'd have more by now. I had a goal of 5000 total by the end of the day today. I have to go to the grocery store now, and I don't know how much time I'm going to put in tonight. Oh well, you can only do so much, right?

3450 words total so far. I'm getting a SLOW start this morning. Too much going on around here. I've got laundry load number 4 in the washing machine, and we've already spent quality time outside with the neighbor watching the backhoe did up a hole in the front lawn for a streetlight. Mr. Dump is not amused, but the guy did tell me that they'lll put loam and seed down when they're done. Meaning that will be the only decent patch in the front.

I did ask if he would accidently dig up the part of the lawn nearest the driveway, or toss a few tulip bulbs in the open hole when they are filling it, and he just laughed at me. Sheesh, I have to do everything myself.

I'm up, I'm up. It's raining. Pooh. Everyone here is getting sick, so this could be a fun weekend. In order to avoid working on the novel I have been cleaning the house. This could be the cleanest the house has been since we moved in by the end of the month.

Chapter 1 is done! It might actually become a prologue during the post-November editing cycle. But it's [checking] 2979 words making up 9 pages.

Prior to this, the longest any "novel" of mine has been is about 20 pages. THe problem is that I would go back and edit and second guess and just start to hate what I'd written. With this book, I try to stop in the middle of a sentence so I can force myself to start writing again, if only to finish the sentence. And I don't read any further back than 2 pages when starting up. It's working for me so far.

Okay, belly full of chinese food (GOD BLESS MR. DUMP!) and I have to write some more. This is already tedious. I hope I don't end up hating my main character. 2441 as of right now.

Is everyone having a good day? TGIF and stuff. I hit the 2000 word mark that I was supposed to finish on the 1st, meaning that now I only have the 2000 to write for today. That's about 5-6 pages of stuff, double-sided.

I don't yet know if the story is any good, but at least it's interesting to write. That's all I can tell you for now.

p.s. I promised my co-worker I wouldn't tell everyone that we got stopped for speeding on the way to get lunch. So shhhh.

Welcome Gwen! 8.5 pounds and 21 inches! Now your parents can see who's really in charge! Hugs to the new parents and grandparents on their first child/grandchild! Try not to spoil her too much, okay guys? Remember, she can't play with that Rokenbok set you want until she's five.

Friday Morning. It's Shrek day! My mom is actually going to pick up a copy for us, because it's easier for her to run out in the middle of the day, seeing as she and my dad are retired. I tried to use the movie as a Mookie bribe to get him to poop in the potty, but he's just really much smarter than I am.

My novel is only 1200 words. I wanted to do 2000 yesterday. I guess that means I have to to 2800 today, huh? I'd better write at least five or ten of them every time I have a minute today.

My friend has been in labor for 13 hours now, unless she had the baby and her husband hasn't gotten to a computer yet. I'm DYING here waiting for news! She's a real 20th century gal. This morning she posted a note to us between contractions.

Almost 1000 words done. I'm aiming for 2000 a day. Sure it's easy on the first day. Wait till I have to remember all the characters and what they've done etc.

But I know the secret. If I start going horribly astray, I'll just say that everything to that point was a horrible dream, and go off in a different direction. Hey, it's not against the rules.

So I'm working on this late from work, because this way I'm not interrupted by Mr. Dump and Mookie and whatever video is in heavy rotation this week. But I have to go home and eat now. I think we're having the California Pizza Kitchen Pizzas made famous on the home page.

Mookie doesn't eat candy so I have a whole bag to myself. And what's up with the people who gave out 1 individually-wrapped lifesaver?

posted by J L Permalink

I started the novel! I wrote 250 words this morning while Mr. Dump was taking his shower. So that means I started before 6am. What is up with THAT? Am I still on daylight savings time?

I honestly didn't have a direction for it. No plot, because we weren't supposed to work on it until today. So I wrote the page (longhand, it was 256 words on the pad I was using) and then, while I showered and got dressed, I thought about going from first person to third, then finally decided first is better, and I now have a basic idea on the plot. Enough to get the character going, but not enough that I'll have to figure out how to get from A to B to C. I'll get from A to B and then SHE can decide if she wants to go to C.
