Kicking Up Little Thought Pebbles at Your Windshield
We're Back
Ahhhh. After a lovely self-imposed web vacation (sorry for not giving prior notice) we're back. It's only been a month...sheesh. And what, no email? Not one person complaining that it's been 4 weeks since I updated the page? Some friends you guys are.
Watch this Space
Next Dump I'll be making a very cool very big announcement. I'm sure you'll want to be the first on your block to read the news, so please, find it in your hearts to check back every once in a while. Really, what cost is it to you to click on the bookmark for this page once or twice, huh? Okay, there. Watch this space...
Dominoes
Last week I learned how to play dominoes. Perhaps this is not big news to many people. I'm sure most learned how to play as kids and haven't given it much thought since then. However, as far as my childhood is concerned, we never owned any. This is particularly important because (as I may or may not have noted in a previous dump), I tried to play once with a friend of mine who did own some, but neither of us knew what we were doing. So we kind of made up rules and it was by far the most boring thing I have done in a year or more.
But on the 18th, Keith and I took his grandmother out for lunch before she headed back home to California, and her sister, her brother and his wife showed up to join us (a 1.5 hour drive, I might add). So Keith and I treated the four +/- 80 year olds to lunch at Barber's Crossing. (Side note: DO eat there if you get the chance. I have eaten lobster and fried clams up and down the New England coast, and I still prefer their product and their pricing. Last week 2 lobsters were going for 11.95 (with potato and cole slaw!))
After we ate, we sat down with them to play a few hands of dominoes, and I got hooked ! What a fun game! Now I've got my eye out to buy a set. The ones his grandmother bought in Minnesota (she is visiting all her kids, and that was the last place she visited before hitting Massachusetts) had about 133 dominoes, with colored dots (so dolts like me don't have to count, we can just match the colors). If anyone has seen such a set, drop me a line!
Crazy People of the Month Award
Well, I think it's time to bestow the crazy people of the month award. That would be Lovely Debra and the Amazing Bob. Yes, Mr. and Mrs. Sojka finally took possession of the house they "bought" last spring this past weekend. So what do they do? They pull up all the carpets and refinish the wood floors in 5 (!!!) rooms all by themselves. In 4 days. So they can move in this weekend.
Now I think it's admirable, really. But I wouldn't want either one of them on my trivial pursuit team after putting down 3 coats of polyurethane. (And I almost spelled that correctly without the spell checker! Only 1 letter wrong!)
Lord of the Dance Update
To combine by obsession with Michael "Watch these feet fly" Flatley and Mystery Science Theatre 3000 is too much to ask for, most days. However, the July 12th show (SciFi Channel, 5pm and 11pm EST) skewering the movie "Jack Frost" started off with a kick-ass jolt of Mike Nelson as Mike Flatley. The beauty of it was Crow and Tom Servo making the appropriate "thunderous tap dancing" noises. 10 out of 10...I thought it was funnier than the MTV parody.
But wait, there's more. I have a link that answers the question "What kind of car did Michael Flatley drive in High School"? See Michael Flatley's Trans Am: High School Memories of Mike Flatley for the inside scoop. And yes, according to the author Michael McCullough, Michael Flatley does really speak with lilt, even though he's a Chicago boy. Oh, and I'll let you read about the Golden Gloves for yourselves. (I'll be keeping this link on at least the next few Dumps just because I'm so pleased with it.)
