Kicking Up Little Thought Pebbles at Your Windshield
What I'm Going To Obsess About Next
You're probably wondering what's next on my list of "trendy and cool things" to make fun of. You don't have to admit it out loud. That's okay. I understand.
I'm having a hard time remembering the last thing I obsessed about. I'm sure there are folks out there who could easily remind me, and will. I can remember a previous obsession. Back in 1983 and 1984, when I was living on the second floor of Assumption at good old SJC, I marked everything I owned with "Official _______ of the 1984 Winter Olympics." (example: Official dorm room of the 1984 Winter Olympics") This was primarily because that year, more than any other I had been aware of (and certainly more than any since) the olympics sold out to every CEO of every product in America. I think Campbell's Chicken Noodle was the official soup.
But I digress. My new "thing" will officially be Michael Flatley's "Lord of the Dance." If you haven't seen him or it yet, it's apparently only a matter of time. Keith and I caught it first on PBS during a telethon. Of course. Michael Flatley was the guest dancer with the version of Riverdance that was on PBS every 15 minutes last fall. He seemed pretty darned good. But this new show, "Lord of the Dance" seemed to be an attempt to rip off the step dance-crazed fans who were starved for more Riverdance. I didn't think it was nearly as good. And I thought the name of the show was pretty pretentious. Lord of the dance? King of Pop? Uh huh. Uh huh.
I thought that would be the end of things. But no, we're watching The Oscar (insert tradmark stuff here) telecast and to my amazement, a production number on, um, editing, starring our own LORD OF THE DANCE! Too wonderful! Michael and friends dance while we see clips of movies behind them, except nobody was looking at the movies. They were all too busy trying to figure out why the sound of tap dancing they were hearing wasn't matching up to his feet. This is the same thing that happened on the PBS special, but not as much with Riverdance. And, I'll add, I only seemed to notice it during his solo dances. As you can see, this is one guy worth obsessing about!
Jumping on the Bandwagon
Look, you don't need me to talk about the Heaven's Gate cult. It's been on every tv station at every hour of the day. Jokes are flying a mile a minute through the internet. So I'll limit my comments to four, which are my own, I thought them up all by my lonesome. Maybe other people have the same opinion, but I'm covering me.
- I never would have bought into this whole cult thing because I never would have accepted that American money is the currency of the universe. Lira, sure, but the quarter?
- The web sites they designed were really crappy. You can tell that different members had different skill levels. There is one site for Pro-something or other, what smells like a cultish-pyramid scheme company, and it's not only hideously ugly, it's written poorly. Hard to be able to afford the rent on a mansion when you only do limited web development, and it's not even that good. (If you want links to their site, I think it and all mirror sites are available from the CNN Web Site)
- Nobody is going to want to buy that house now.
- I'll bet Hale and Bopp are really excited to have their comet overshadowed by the UFO hiding behind it.
And for the record, rest easy fans of the Dump Truck. A search of the kitchen showed no trace of pudding or applesauce.
Colic Prevention?
My angel Abigail Ebb is apparently not the quietest baby on the block, much to Mom and Dad's dismay. While mom and dad have all the medical books at their fingertips, apparently there is no "cure" for colic. So I'm reaching out to my assembled "fans" to request that you pass along anything you know works for colic to your humble driver so I can give them some help. Thanks!
