Kicking Up Little Thought Pebbles at Your Windshield

Soylent Green

I paid a dollar to rent a movie last Friday. There's a place near my house that rents new and old. Old ones are a dollar.

"You're a hell of a piece of furniture"
I was expecting a really terrible movie; bad acting, bad script. Much to my delight (?) it was actually a very good movie. Of course, it would have helped to not know that most famous quote from the movie, but I don't think it really spoiled my enjoyment. The only thing I couldn't handle was Charlton Heston's jaunty little scarf. I just can't see the hard-edged cop of 2022 being forced to wear something that, that, well, um, kitschy. The other amusing thing was the ultra high tech computer the furniture was playing with. Asteroids, eh? Wow! We're really come a long way with the top of the line computer, haven't we?

The same day I rented "A Very Brady Sequel" which Keith interpreted as me being mad at him for something. As a short review, I thought it didn't have the jaw-dropping novelty of the first one, but I thought it was a better movie.

Gift Certificates

I should first state that I like gift certificates. I never turn them down. The best ones are "mall" certificates that can be used at any store in a mall. So tempting! What to buy!

I received a couple of different certificates for Christmas this year and I haven't used them yet. I haven't used the bookstore gift certificate because it was for Lauriets and the one we usually are near (at the Pheasant Lane Mall) closed! Imagine! That store has been there since the mall opened. I used to go in for their "Bargain Book" table. Good stuff for a fraction of the cover price. Now the whole store is gone.

So that leaves my Strawberries (music) gift certificate. I haven't seen an "I must have this" cd recently so I was hanging on to it. And I read in the paper last week that Strawberries is planning to file chapter 11. Well hey, that would be fate, wouldn't it? I'm going to use the gift certificate this weekend. Maybe I'll just buy some black videotapes so I can get all the new Mystery Science Theatre 3000 shows off the SciFi channel.

Letter to the Editor

I wrote a letter to the editor of the Worcester Telegram and Gazette last week. I sent it via email, which I think is the best and most efficient way to communicate. I'd read an article on their web site and it blew me away. I had to write. (I'd post the URL here, but they don't archive their stories so what's the point? Unless you want to see what the weather is in Worcester, or find out the current status of the kidnapped Polar Cola polar bear Oscar (He's been rescued). In that case, click Here)

The only problem is that when they got my email, they needed me to verify that I had actually written the letter. So they sent me a postcard in the mail to sign and send back postage paid. Which means that not only did it add 2 days on either side of my getting this card before they could print my time-sensitive letter, they spent 32 cents to mail it to me and then the 20 cents or whatever for the postage paid card. It cost THEM money (and stationery) for me to mail them a letter to the editor. This doesn't seem a particularly sensible way to handle emailed letters to the editor.

I guess the only other thing is that I don't subscribe to their paper, so there's no way I'm going to know when it appears. Or if it appears. Because they don't include editorials on their web site.

Private Parts

I'm going to admit it here. I'm not ashamed. I can stand here and say it out loud. I am planning to see the movie next weekend. Keith said we should make an "event" out of it but I don't even know if Leominster is going to get it. I assume they will, just because the money making potential is there.

I find Stern amusing. And when he gets me angry, which he does, I change the station. But I also "get" his humor. While I don't know if he's making the world a better place (and in fact I seriously doubt that he is) I don't think he's a threat to our national security.

So there. I said it. And I'd say it again.
